![]() Spider silk (SS) is one such material and the combination of its toughness 2 and bio-compatibility 3, 4 makes the material strategically important for implant, electrical, sensor and actuating applications. Moreover, natural materials often possess complex and robust physical properties that can be harnessed for electrical and sensor applications. Incorporation of natural materials into these designs is advantageous to reduce the quantity of toxic components of the electronic devices. Many toxic elements and non-biodegradable plastics are commonly found in conventional electronics, and efforts to develop new eco-friendly electronic designs are therefore desirable. ![]() This is one of many examples showing potential in this area. The immense demand for electronics, and thus the electronic waste and environmental pollution it generates, poses a growing problem that will require innovative solutions 1. "These are still early days, but our results are a proof of concept that paves the way to exploiting the naturally efficient spider spinning process to produce reinforced bionic silk fibres, thus further improving one of the most promising strong materials."Īndrea Ferrari, director of the Cambridge Graphene Centre, Science and Technology Officer of the Graphene Flagship, and Chair of the Flagship's management panel, added "The interaction between graphene and related materials and bio-materials is key to broaden their possible applications. "This is the highest fibre toughness reported to date, and a strength comparable to that of the strongest carbon fibres or limpet teeth," said Pugno. So our study looked at whether spider silk's properties could be 'enhanced' by artificially incorporating various different nanomaterials into the silk's biological protein structures," said Pugno. "We already know that there are biominerals present in the protein matrices and hard tissues of insects, which gives them high strength and hardness in their jaws, mandibles and teeth, for example. It is among the best spun polymer fibres in terms of tensile strength, ultimate strain, and especially toughness, even when compared to synthetic fibres such as Kevlar," said Nicola Pugno, of the University of Trento. "Humans have used silkworm silks widely for thousands of years, but recently research has focussed on spider silk, as it has promising mechanical properties. For example, these artificially modified silks could find use in high-performance or biodegradable textiles such as parachutes or medical dressings. This study opens up new potentials for tailoring the properties of biological materials to enhance their properties for use in novel applications. The strongest silk threads had a fracture strength of up to 5.4 GPa, over 3 times as strong as the unmodified silks, as well as a tenfold increase of toughness modulus up to 2.1 GPa. The silks showed enhanced mechanical properties compared to reference silks collected from the same spiders, with significant increases in the strength, toughness and elasticity of the biocomposite silk threads. After allowing the spiders to ingest the graphene and CNT dispersions from their environment, silk was collected from the spiders and tested for graphene/CNT content and mechanical properties. To enhance the spider's silk, the researchers prepared solutions of graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which were sprayed within the enclosure the spiders were kept in. ![]() ![]() Natural materials can have properties that cannot be achieved with lab-produced materials, and taking inspiration from nature is an effective research tool The work is published in 2D Materials and was a collaboration between the University of Trento, Italy and the Cambridge Graphene Centre at the University of Cambridge, UK, within the Graphene Flagship's Polymer Composites Work Package.Īrtificially modified biological materials are an expanding area of research. The silk - produced naturally by the spiders, incorporating graphene and carbon nanotubes (rolled up graphene sheets) introduced in their environment - had enhanced mechanical properties of up to three times the strength and ten times the toughness of the unmodified silks. Researchers from the Graphene Flagship have demonstrated that graphene-based materials can be used to boost the properties of spider's silk.

Swimlane diagrams use horizontal or vertical lines to separate the different departments or functions involved in the workflow.Ī swimlane diagram can be used to depict the steps for hiring in a company. This type of diagram is particularly useful for identifying areas where communication and coordination between departments can be improved. Swimlane diagrams, also known as cross-functional flowcharts, illustrate the steps in a process across multiple departments or functions. This tool can also show the different stages of the process, such as assembly, quality control, and packaging. A flowchart diagram can be used to illustrate the steps involved in producing a product, from raw materials to finished goods. Let's take the example of a manufacturing operation. They are particularly useful for identifying areas where a process can be improved, especially when there are redundant or unnecessary steps being outlined. These diagrams are often used to show the logic of a process. While there are many types of workflow diagrams, some of the most common include: Flowchart Diagramsįlowchart diagrams use symbols to represent each step in a workflow and the connections between them. Hasura, which is headquartered in San Francisco and Bangalore, India, was founded in 2017 by Rajoshi Ghosh and CEO Tanmai Gopal. GraphQL’s users often speak about its simplicity and how they’re able to craft queries that can traverse complex data structures. If the data is simple enough to fit in one table, there’s typically not much to gain from switching to GraphQL, but if the data includes multiple tables, then it can shine. GraphQL is a simplified mechanism for presenting queries to a database, with requests that list all the desired fields and add limits to particular fields for matching or searching. GraphQL insideĪs Peter Wayner writes for VentureBeat, traditional databases are based on a language called SQL, short for Structured Query Language. Hasura - which today announced that it raised $100 million in financing at a $1 billion valuation from Greenoaks, with participation from existing investors Nexus Venture Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Vertex Ventures - offers a platform that creates GraphQL APIs from existing databases, ostensibly making it easier to build new apps or add features to existing ones. In the years since Facebook developed GraphQL internally and transferred ownership to the Linux Foundation, tools designed to make the language easier to use have emerged from startups including Apollo, OneGraph (acquired by Netlify), and Hasura. ![]() Properties in listings may have been sold or may no longer be available.Ĭopyright ©2023 My Florida Regional MLS DBA Stellar MLS. The longer they do, the more likely they are to leave a legacy that lasts for decades to come. User interfaces may never hold the nostalgic charm of a rugged, old Vespa scooter, but digital products can still improve lives. Maybe instead of obsessing over the latest trends, the industry ought to applaud work that has stood the test of time. Design for Longevityĭigital designers would be wise to recognize the value of creating work that maintains relevancy for years to come. ![]() ![]() These are small ways in which digital design may be nudged toward longevity, even in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. ![]() When time is short, extend or customize existing systems. When there’s ample time, create a consistent design system. Products must make it through their first few years of existence before they can worry about aging well.īut small decisions can set products on the right track. In such circumstances, longevity isn’t the first, second, or even fifth priority of digital product design. More often than not, digital designers will see their work perish before they see it age. They don’t have the resources to explore how to add extra years of life to their interfaces. Not so for digital designers.įurthermore, many startups are in survival mode. Industrial designers can be sure that their work will outlive them. A car made by a company that no longer exists in a country that no longer exists can still be used if it is well maintained. If Google were to go bankrupt and close, its products would close with it. Like plants, they need to be constantly watered in order to survive. Pragmaticĭigital designs have much in common with plants in terms of longevity. Apply the 80/20 rule and err on the side of simplicity when in doubt. It does, however, mean that features are chosen deliberately and with the holistic experience in mind. This is not to say that longevity requires products to be dumbed down or limited to a certain number of features. In web design, this means forgoing animations that drop frame rates to 10fps or not recreating physical surfaces in HTML, CSS, and JS. Rather than forcing creative visions upon underlying technology, tech-adaptive design works in collaboration with the underlying technology. As products become more widely adopted, multilingual experiences should be offered. This means designing for accessibility, performance, and inclusiveness. One way to encourage the long-term survival of digital products is to make them usable by the widest audience possible. No formalized principles exist for creating “timeless” digital interfaces, not surprising in an industry run on the motto of “move fast and break things.” But if there were guiding principles, they ought to be universal, tech-adaptive, simple, and pragmatic. Whether deliberate foresight or a limitation of the graphics capabilities at the time, the glimpses of the interfaces ring authentic to this day. It took another four decades until Apple ditched skeuomorphism and followed suit. The film’s concept interfaces featured something akin to a flat design aesthetic. Takeaway: Sustainable businesses make for sustainable products. Among today’s makers of digital products, it’s rare to find companies that practice careful decision-making or refuse to chase after every new trend. Their dedication to sustainable, long-term products is reflected in the design of Basecamp 3.ĭesigners can help create products that stand the test of time, but they are powerless if CEOs don’t appreciate products that are designed to age gracefully. Basecamp (2003)īasecamp made its name by going against the Silicon Valley dogma of venture capital funding, exponential growth, and early exits. Takeaway: Simplicity and performance alone can win in the long run. Chrome’s success is a testament to the importance of performance for a great user experience. The understanding of hardware and browser limitations, and striving for that silky smooth 60fps, is what makes digital design fundamentally different from print or industrial design. Google’s major contribution here was making performance a must-have for all digital products going forward. For example, if I could have all my files in one big folder, and them scatter them across different folders using shortcuts to the same file, in the big folder. The one thing that I would add to it, is shortcuts.
